Laughing Buddha Statues


Laughing Buddha is a significant home decor artifact. Laughing Buddha has today become an integral part of modern home decor. Not only the laughing buddha is used for decorative purpose, but also for its significance in feng shui as one which brings luck, prosperity, happiness and success. Laughing Buddha is the celestial buddha named Hotei or Pu-Tai was a jolly Laughing monk in ancient China and  because of his benevolent nature, he came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva who will be Maitreya (the Future Buddha). His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation “Laughing Buddha.”  Today, this statue is found in many temples, restaurants, shops, offices and even in jewellery, as it has become a symbol of abundance and contentment.

The Laughing Buddha image is seen as a stout, smiling or laughing bald man in robes with a largely exposed pot belly stomach, which symbolizes good luck, happiness, and plentitude. Some sculpture has small children at his feet. Another sculpture shows the figure with begging bowl to represent his Buddhist nature. Happy Buddha statues on a cart being pulled by children is another depiction. The other common postures are the sitting Laughing Buddha, the standing Laughing Buddha and the Laughing Buddha with his arms in the air. There is the reclining posion as well which is also a depiction of the position that was adopted by the Lord Buddha in his last days before he went ahead to attain Nirvana.  The laughing Buddha is also found seated on the Dragon throne, which symbolizes the seat of power and influence in Asian cultures. There are times when you will come across the laughing Buddha statue which has gold nuggets in his arm. The gold stands for the money and wealth that the laughing Buddha statues will fetch owners of the statue.

Legend
According to legend, if one rubs the Laughing Buddha’s great belly, it brings forth wealth, good luck, and prosperity.  In Feng Shui, he is the symbol for wealth. Laughing Buddha statues are popular house warming gifts. They are also popular as good luck charms. It is better to get a laughing buddha as a gift rather than to buy one.

Where the Laughing Buddha Statues Should be Placed?

It is commonly believed that the Laughing Buddha statues must not be placed on the floor. They must be positioned on an elevated surface, as a sign of respect. Moreover, the best direction to place them is the personal wealth direction. Some says that the laughing buddha sould face the front door.
